Tamworth CBD Tree Planting

What's happening?

With the support of the Australian Federal Government, new trees are being planted in Brisbane St and White St (between Marius Street and Kable Avenue) in the Tamworth CBD. These trees are being planted to align with Tamworth's Urban Street Tree Management Plan (PDF 7.8MB). The aim of planting trees in these areas is to:

  • Provide shade
  • Reduce urban heat
  • Improve air quality
  • Increase amenity

Heat mapping undertaken in September 2022 revealed the need for additional trees to reduce the elevated temperatures present in Tamworth’s CBD when compared to residential areas. To plan ahead and reduce temperatures in Tamworth’s main shopping area, greening our streets will increase shade, reduce urban heat and improve air quality – benefitting current and future generations.

How will it happen?

Engineered soil vaults will be installed before the trees are planted to contain the roots of the new trees. This will prevent any damage to pavement or nearby buildings as the trees grow. Infrastructure to prevent all trees from damage will also be installed. By investing in sustainable tree infrastructure that will not impact systems underneath our roads, we can take a step forward in ensuring our CBD is sustainable for current and future generations. Once the soil vaults are in, we will be planting:

  • Brisbane St: Aristrocrat Ornamental Pears
  • White St: Desert Ashes

When will it happen?

Work to begin installing tree infrastructure will commence from mid March 2024. Once all sustainable infrastructure features are built, trees will be planted in winter 2024. Council will make every effort to ensure the works will have a minimal impact on all residents. We appreciate your patience while this work is in progress.
