Youth Council Meeting Update - 30 April 2026

Here is an overview of the outcomes from tonight’s Tamworth Regional Youth Council Meeting.

  • Youth Mayor Woods welcomed special guest Katerine McKernon, congratulating her on her recent appointment as Advocate for Children and Young People. The Youth Council participated in a group session with Katerine to better understand her role and explore opportunities to work collaboratively to raise awareness of youth issues and opportunities. Youth Councillors also shared insights into their current initiatives and discussed how Katerine can support their work. Council members noted that they will submit their contribution to the Strategic Plan for Children and Young People, ensuring youth perspectives inform its development.

  • Youth Council Expressions of Interest (EOI) are now open, with Youth Councillors encouraged by the strong number of applications received to date. An opportunity for current Youth Council members to present at an upcoming EOI information sessions at Tamworth Regional high schools will also be explored.

  • A debrief was conducted following the 2026 Youth Week activities. Council members reflected on the successes of the week and collaboratively identified opportunities for improvement in future events.

  • Youth Councillors agreed to further explore hosting future meetings at the Tamworth Regional Youth Centre. Meeting locations will be confirmed following the close of each Youth Council meeting. Councillors also requested the development of a communications plan and strategy from Tamworth Regional Council’s Communications Team to review current channels and identify opportunities to better engage and communicate with young people across the region.

  • Youth Councillors have agreed to continue attending Councillor Catch Ups. Increased promotion will be undertaken to encourage greater youth participation at future sessions.

  • Youth Councillors agreed to send a letter of thanks following the recent Youth Facilitation Training undertaken by members. The training provided a range of activities designed to strengthen leadership skills and support personal development. Councillors were also given the opportunity to present and collaborate as a team, showcasing their skills in a practical setting.
