Mayor

Councillor Russell Webb was elected to his first term as Tamworth Region Mayor on 5 January, 2022.

He started his career in local government in 1991 when elected to the former Parry Shire Council. He has served continuously on Tamworth Regional Council since it was formed by amalgamation 17 years ago in 2004. He previously served two terms as deputy mayor from 2010 to 2016.

Cr Webb wants to continue to see the Tamworth region move towards a prosperous future through actions which ensure a vibrant and growing economy while not losing sight of the basics. “Our community wants our region to thrive with existing businesses being able to grow and create new jobs while new ventures are attracted to invest and establish here,” he said.

“At the same time Council must support community groups and their volunteers in the important work they do to improve our region.”

Building a safe, strong and resilient community is also a priority for Councillor Webb. It has helped drive his involvement with the Tamworth Region Crime Prevention Working Group for many years, support for creating new business opportunities in the local community and advocacy for improved water security in the Peel Valley both through the construction of the new larger Dungowan Dam and other measures such as making use of emerging technologies to treat water for industrial use.

A carpenter by trade, Cr Webb has been self-employed for the past 8 years running a mixed faming property at Winton on the western outskirts of Tamworth. Previous to that he was an inspector and manager with WorkCover NSW for 33 years as well as being a part-time Building and Construction teacher with TAFE NSW for 18 years.

His community interests include more than 40 years as a Rural Fire Service Volunteer. He is also a current member of the South Tamworth Lions Club and the NSW Farmers Association.

He is a current serving board member of North West Local Land Services (appointed in 2019) and Oxley Community Transport.
