Youth Council meeting Update - 29 May 2025

Thursday 29 May, 2025

Here is an overview of the outcomes from Thursday afternoon’s Youth Council meeting:

    • In alignment with its Blueprint 100 Plan, Tamworth Regional Council is currently embarking on a technology transformation. Marketing and Communications Manager, Karlee Cole, and Acting Communications and Marketing Coordinator, Taylor Fletcher, attended the Youth Council meeting to discuss ways to enhance the accessibility of Council’s website for young people in the region. The Youth Council gave feedback to the Marketing and Communications team regarding how they access local government information, what information they would like Council’s website to feature for young people, and recommended improvements Council could make to enhance user experience. This aligns with the Access and Connectivity focus area of the Youth Strategy Action Plan.
    • The Youth Council invited Paul Kelly, Council’s Manager Sport and Recreation, to provide an update on intended plans for the Viaduct Skate Park. The Youth Council previously requested Tamworth Regional Council to investigate installing shade sails over the Tamworth Skate Park. Council confirmed that additional shade over the skatepark would result in issues with mould, however could explore increased shade options such as planting trees nearby the skatepark area. This aligns with the Access and Connectivity focus area of the Youth Strategy Action Plan.
    • The Youth Council invited members from the Liveable Communities team at Tamworth Regional Council to provide an overview of how Council operates to prioritise youth safety in the region. Members of staff discussed upgrades to CCTV footage software across the region, how Council provides services to support environmental health, school canteens, compliance complaints, traineeships, after school care, the partnership with TACCO, parking and noise complaints within the region. The aim of their attendance was to provide the Youth Council with insight into the various management areas that Council covers, while showcasing the different career pathways within the organisation. This aligns with the Life Ready focus area of the Youth Strategy Action Plan.
    • On Tuesday 27 May, the Youth Council were able to meet with Zoë Robinson Advocate for Children and Young People – to discuss issues of concern to young people in the region. The Youth Council would like to thank Zoë for her insight and are grateful for her attendance.
