Tamworth region Australia Day award winners

Communities across the region came together this morning to celebrate Australia Day, welcome new Australian citizens and crown the winners of the annual Australia Day Awards.

Tamworth Region Mayor Russell Webb sent his congratulations to each community member who was nominated for and won an award.

“We are fortunate to have many exceptional individuals in our community, and I enjoyed taking the time to meet the award recipients in Tamworth after the ceremony.”

The 2023 Citizen of the Year was Geoff Allen. Geoff has made an incredible difference not only in our local area but further afield in his 50 years of voluntary service. Geoff is now 80 years young and still an active community worker for the Tamworth Lions Club, Meals on Wheels, Tamworth Men’s Shed and holds many committee positions in community volunteer groups. Geoff recently completed a 600km push bike ride as part of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter fundraiser helping raise over $80,000.

Jorja Brown was awarded the Tamworth 2023 Young Citizen of the Year. She is described as an exceptional student who has immersed herself in a range of activities within both the Oxley High School and the community. Jorja demonstrated outstanding leadership and compassion as the coordinator of the Oxley High School ‘Share the Dignity’ drive which donated 750 products to support women experiencing period poverty, severe financial hardship and domestic violence. Jorja attended the 2023 NSW Youth United Nations State Conference where she gained greater understanding about leadership, diplomacy and advocacy. This inspired Jorja to deliver change in her community.

The 2023 Mitchel Brady Encouragement Award was awarded to Oxley High Schools Year 10 student Mili Woods. Mili was recognised as a determined young lady who always has a smile on her face. She is actively involved as a volunteer in many areas of both the school and community. Mili was awarded the Kevin Anderson MP Award for Outstanding Commitment to the SRC. She was commended for both her academic and sporting achievements in 2023.

Manilla

The Manilla 2023 Citizen of the Year was Kate Phelps. Kate is involved in a number of local organisations and is currently President of the Manilla CWA Evening Branch and the Manilla Hospital Auxiliary as well as Secretary for Manilla Matters. The Renewable Energy Long Lunch organised and prepared by Kate saw 300 people enjoy a top menu. Her tireless work ethic and commitment to the local community make her a worthy winner of this award.

The Manilla 2023 Achiever of the Year was Paul Holden. He is well known for his remarkable success in martial arts and being able to pass his knowledge of taekwondo to students he trains in Manilla. Throughout the year he secured a spot in the Australian Martial Arts Championships (AMAC) held in Sydney and placed in his classes at the event. Described as an inspiration to aspiring athletes and recognised for his hard work, determination and unwavering commitment to the sport. 

The Manilla 2023 Young Citizen of the Year was Luke Beattie. He enjoys volunteering for community events including the 100 Mile Dinner (CWA), Vintage Machinery Show, LEGO Day (Manilla Matters), Movie Day and the CWA Trivia Night. Luke is one of seven children and was described as an outstanding role model at Manilla High School. Luke is currently completing an apprenticeship at Intersales, Temora NSW working on farm equipment.

The Manilla Community Christmas Tree event was awarded the 2023 Community Event of the Year. The event invokes the feeling of Christmas within the community. The spectacularly decorated tree takes pride of place in Rotary Park and is activated with the Annual Lions Club Christmas gathering. Gayle Riley and her family were recognised for their efforts in securing this great community icon.

Barraba Awards Ceremony will be held tonight at Barraba Golf Club with Ambassador Mr John lee OAM and Councillor Stephen Mears.
