Rehabilitation of sewer mains by in-situ relining

Overview

Tamworth Regional Council is investing $2.5M to rehabilitate nearly 15km of sewer mains throughout Tamworth, Manilla and Barraba to ensure these critical pieces of wastewater infrastructure continue to transfer sewage safely underground for years to come.

Previous CCTV condition assessment projects have provided a list of the worst condition sewer mains that are in need of repair due to many factors including cracking, breaks, root infiltration or general pipe degradation. These will be rehabilitated using trenchless technology that does not require excavation to occur and uses sewer maintenance holes as the launch and retrieval points.

A spiral wound interlocking PVC material will be installed into existing sewer mains (see image below) that creates a new conduit for sewage to be transferred from each household or business all the way to the treatment plant. Aligning with Council’s priority to deliver durable infrastructure for our region’s growing population, these works are one way Council uses ratepayer’s sewer rates.

The Contractor (Interflow) will contact those residents and businesses that will be directly impacted by the works which may include gaining access to manholes or junctions in backyards, however they will never require access inside your house or business.

The majority of the works can be completed while the sewer is live, so there should not be any impact to going about day to day activities (shower, washing machine or cooking etc). If any plugging or bypass is required that could impact a short period of main isolation, the Contractor will make direct contact with you.

Works include each identified sewer main being cleaned and CCTV inspected, relined including cut out of each service junction, then junctions sealed with final CCTV to confirm liner is placed correctly. Different crews will complete each task, so you are likely to see different Interflow marked vehicles on multiple occasions a few weeks apart.

Interflow are approximately 50 percent through this project. All planned work in Manilla and Barraba has been completed. The project is scheduled for completion in early 2024.

If you have any further questions about the project, please contact Council’s Project Manager Jonathon Bell on 6767 5555 or trc@tamworth.nsw.gov.au
