Have your say on future housing in the region
Tamworth Regional Council is inviting the local community, housing providers, business and industry representatives to have their say to help inform a new Tamworth Regional Housing Strategy.
Tamworth is experiencing a range of pressures associated with a strong ongoing population and commercial growth in the city, adding a strain on infrastructure. However, smaller towns and villages in the region are not growing as strongly, with some struggling to hold population and services.
Tamworth Regional Council Manager of Future Communities, Andrew Spicer said the Housing Strategy will inform strategic planning for development over the next 20 years.
“We need a coordinated approach across all levels of government and the private sector to support diverse and sustainable housing in the region,” he said.
“In developing this strategy, Council will consider factors including demographics, local land use opportunities, housing supply and demand, and how this may change over time. We will also identify areas of cultural, environmental, heritage or local character significance and outline actions to address issues of housing affordability.”
Through the strategy Council will explore the challenges associated with housing such as continuing rapid population growth, the shortage of low-cost rental accommodation and the lack of diversity within the existing housing stock, and aims to identify a vision to address these challenges.
Community input will help create a Strategy that will guide future planning of the housing needs and wants of people who call our region home, now and into the future.
Council is seeking community feedback to identify trends and issues, and ensure the Strategy reflects the values of the community. The survey will close Tuesday 12 December, 2023 After this time, feedback will be reviewed and included in the Draft Tamworth Regional Housing Strategy which will be placed on public exhibition for community feedback next year.
The Tamworth Regional Housing Strategy is funded by the NSW Government Regional Housing Strategic Planning Fund.
