Gallery to display commemorative portrait

Christmas has come early with a new gift to the Tamworth Regional Gallery. Tamworth Regional Council is proud to permanently acquire the significant portrait of the late Elder Aunty Yvonne Kent. The portrait is a testament to Aunty Yvonne's leadership and community contributions, and has been created through the help of many creative community members.

Today, Tamworth Regional Council officially acquired the portrait and will be placing it on display in the Tamworth Regional Gallery from Tuesday, 7 May 2024.

The Tamworth Pioneers Portrait Leadership Development Program project, began in 2021, led by the board of Regional Unlimited. Due to certain COVID-19 restrictions at the time, the project was reinstated earlier this year. The project aimed to recognise and pay tribute to the late Aunty Yvonne Kent and the work she did within the Tamworth community.

Tamworth Regional Council Director Art Gallery and Museums Bridget Guthrie said “The collaboration involved in bringing this together was incredible. It is such a great initiative and dedication to Aunty Yvonne Kent. It has great local significance so it will be a pleasure to put on display in the Gallery”.

The project saw a range of community members become involved in this project, with various aspects of the portrait having been painted by many different participants, as well as the inclusion of other textured mediums.
Ms Guthrie’s appreciation for such an artwork was evident “We are so pleased to be able to display this artwork in the Gallery. Having been orchestrated by a multitude of people, it showcases the leadership and impact that Aunty Yvonne Kent had in the community”.

The portrait will remain on display in the Tamworth Regional Gallery until Sunday, 23 June 2024, and it will coincide with the Archibald Prize during this time.
