Thursday, 31 August 2023

Tamworth Regional Council is gearing up to commemorate a monumental ten-year milestone for Fiesta La Peel, the Tamworth region's beloved multicultural event. To mark this significant occasion, Fiesta La Peel is taking its celebrations to new heights by extending the festivities through the week of October 14 to 21 concluding with the main event in Bicentennial Park.

On Saturday, 21 October, Bicentennial Park will transform into a multicultural hub with a full program of music, performances and demonstrations. There will be a range of different stalls featuring food and art from across the world then to finish the night off with a bang, there will be a fireworks display on Number 1 Oval.

"We are thrilled to be celebrating a decade of Fiesta La Peel this year, and what better way to mark this milestone than by expanding our celebrations to be over an entire week," said Crystal Vero, Tamworth Regional Council, Festival and Events Officer.

Mrs Vero further commented “this milestone is a testament to the incredible support and engagement we've received from the multicultural community over the years."

During the extended celebrations over 80 different nationalities will come together to celebrate the diversity of the Tamworth region through music, dance and cuisine from across the globe including Laotian, Thai, Chinese, Hungarian, Persian, Iranian, Indian, North American, South American, Taiwanese, Australian, Polish, Filipino, Nepalese, Italian, German and Spanish.

New to the Fiesta La Peel festivities this year is "Fiesta Bollywood on Fitzroy" on Saturday 14 October in Fitzroy Plaza. This event will feature live traditional and Bollywood dance performances by local dance groups including the Punjworth Bhangra Group. Also, a well know DJ from Sydney DJ Btrix will perform, providing high energy pumping music and a festive atmosphere. Attendees can even try it out with short Bollywood dance lessons.

Other events and exciting new additions across the week-long celebration so far include pop up performances in Fitzroy Street Plaza, Pinot & Picasso mid-week studio exclusive art sessions and the ‘Fiesta Food Trail’ supported by local businesses that will add an enriching layer to the festivities.

Eddie Whitham from Multicultural Tamworth said “Fiesta La Peel is really important to our community as it is inclusive of everyone, no matter what their background is.”

Mr Whitham added “we can’t wait to celebrate ten years of this fantastic event which allows the region’s multicultural community show off their food, culture and music to the wider community.”

For the past decade Fiesta La Peel has been delivered and funded by Tamworth Regional Council with the support and involvement of event partner Multicultural Tamworth Inc. Additional funding for this project has been provided by the NSW Government through their 2023/24 Stronger Together Festivals and Events Grant Program which has been used to support the ten-year celebration.

Fiesta La Peel’s tenth anniversary week promises to be a bunch of fun celebrating the diversity of the Tamworth region and the people who call it home. For more information on the week's events and the main event please visit www.destinationtamworth.nsw.gov.au/fiestalapeel
