Carthage Street Trunk Watermain Reline

Overview

Tamworth Regional Council is investing $1.5M to rehabilitate the trunk watermain that runs up the southern side of Carthage Street between Darling Street and Kitchener Street. This is part of Council’s Water Asset Renewal Program. This project continues Watermain works that were completed previously on the northern side of Carthage Street to provide a new reticulation main, which allows this main being renewed to act as one of the trunk delivery lines linking Calala Water Treatment Plant and Victoria Park Reservoir. Once this is completed, road rehabilitation will be able to occur.

The work will include slip-lining a new polyethylene pipe inside the existing cast-iron watermain which, while reducing the internal diameter of the pipe, will not impact ability to deliver potable water to the area. Launch and retrieval pits (including intersection crossings) will be excavated to allow the pipe to be inserted at various locations. The pipe is welded together into long strings and at times the Contractor will be required to move the pipe over the ground to the launch locations which will impact traffic for short periods of time. There will be changes to traffic conditions in the area throughout the project so please follow all road signage for detours or diversions. The Contractor will liaise with any impacted properties for access requirements throughout the project.

To allow the connection of side streets to the new water main, short term water outages will occur at various times during the project. Any impacted residents will be notified before any disruptions to water supply take place.

The first stage of the project is nearing completion with 800m of water main installed between Darling Street and White Street. The main has been pressure tested and will be disinfected and flushed prior to being placed in to service by the end of this week. Excavations will be backfilled and the road temporary sealed following this i.e. future road works will occur on completion of the project.

The project will then move on to stage 2 which involves relining the water main from Kitchener Street back to White Street.

The project is on track to finish mid-October, to allow road rehabilitation to follow later in the year.

If you have any further questions about the project, please contact Council’s Project Manager Aaron Anderson on 6767 5555 or trc@tamworth.nsw.gov.au.
