Sports Awards
The Tamworth Region is proud of its strong and diverse sporting culture. The Tamworth Regional Sports Awards were established by Council to celebrate the outstanding achievements of individuals, clubs and associations in our community.
How to Make a Nomination
- All nominations must be made on the official Council nomination form.
- Nominations can be made for individuals, teams, clubs, coaches or administrators.
- The nominee must be a resident of the Tamworth Regional Council Local Government Area (LGA) or must have lived in the area during the qualifying period.
- Nominations are for achievements in sport (e.g. performances, representative selection, contributions etc.).
- The performance qualifying period for the awards is from 1 September 2023 to 14 October 2024.
- Past recipients of an award are eligible to nominate and receive an award
- The decision of the assessment panel is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
Assessment Criteria and Process
INDIVIDUAL AWARDS
Including Junior or Senior Sports Star of the Year, Coach of the Year, Cara Hickson Special Achievement Award, Ken McKenzie services to sport award and the Local Achiever award.
- High performance shown by an individual within their sport.
- Representative selection.
- Individual who has excelled in sports coaching.
- Services by a volunteer or administrator within their sport.
- Outstanding result achieved under exceptional circumstances.
- Significant achievement at the local sporting level. This could be a single performance or occur over a season.

The award honours a person, club or team for a sporting achievement under exceptional circumstances or in being involved in an out of the ordinary sport. Cara was an exceptionally talented swimmer and had a promising career ahead on the sporting pathway until her diagnosis. Cara passed away after her battle with leukemia, however this award helps to honour her achievements and commitments to sport. |
The Services to Sport Award recognises services by volunteers and administrators for any length of time. This may be cumulative over a number of years or for a significant event/activity during the eligible period. This award is given in the honour of Ken McKenzie who contributed to a lifetime of supporting Tamworth sport. |
Open to all ages for achievements made at a local level either in a single performance or over a season. |
TEAM/GROUP AWARDS
Including Junior or Senior Sports Team of the Year award and the Sports Development Award
- High performance shown by a team within their sport e.g. representing their school/region/state, great results when representing.
- High achievement by a club/organisation in sport development E.g. sport promotion/growth, facility development, events, administration/service improvement, education.

For example includes sport promotion, growth, facility development, events, admin/service improvements, education by a club/organisation. |
HONOUR AWARDS
TAMWORTH OLYMPIC HONOUR WALL
Eligibility:
· Nominees must have represented and/or been selected for Australia in a playing or coaching capacity, in a competitive sport at the Olympic or Paralympic Games
· The nominated athlete must have received the majority of their primary and secondary education in Tamworth’s LGA.
· The nominated athlete’s Australian sports skills must have been initialised and/or developed within the Tamworth LGA.
TAMWORTH REGIONAL SPORTING HALL OF FAME
· Nominees must have represented and/or been selected for Australia in a playing capacity, in a competitive sport at a senior* level that is recognised by the Australian Sports Commission, the AIS or any other national body.
· The nominated athlete must have received the majority of their primary and secondary education in the Tamworth LGA.
· The nominated athlete’s Australian sports skills must have been initialised and/or developed within the Tamworth LGA. Example of non-qualification include: someone who came to the Tamworth region for a short period of time for coaching or sporting facilities but was not born or educated in the region.
*Senior means no age group, no junior, no country level, no veterans, no A teams, no Prime Minister’s selected teams.
An independent panel of judges will assess nominations, selecting finalists, including a winner.
Awards Presentation
Awards will be presented at the Wests Diggers Club in a presentation ceremony at 6pm Friday 22 November, 2024.
