Hazardous Materials
There are a range of waste materials that have properties that make them hazardous or potentially harmful to human health or the environment. Some liquid wastes can also be hazardous. Council runs a number of regional programs and participates in national initiatives that are designed to help residents and farmers dispose of some of these hazardous wastes. More information is also available from the Office of Environment and Heritage website.

Asbestos fibres are hazardous when inhaled. They can be released into the air when asbestos products are incorrectly handled, stored or transported. It is illegal to re-use, recycle or dispose of asbestos in domestic waste. The Tamworth Waste Management Facility is the only facility in the region that is licensed to accept asbestos waste.

Two chemical collection programs operate across the region to enable safe disposal of chemicals. Tamworth Regional Council, in conjunction with Northern Inland Regional Waste, conducts the Annual Chemical CleanOut Campaign around July each year. ChemClear is a nationally run program which focuses on agricultural and veterinary chemicals.

Tamworth Regional Council participates in drumMUSTER, which is the national program for the collection and recycling of empty, cleaned, non-returnable crop protection and animal health chemical containers. Barraba, Manilla, Nundle and Tamworth Waste Management Facilities are all drumMUSTER collection points. An appointment must be made with the collection centre before delivering your empty drums.
