Asbestos fibres are hazardous when inhaled. They can be released into the air when asbestos products are incorrectly handled, stored or transported for disposal.
Handling and Transport
It is essential that asbestos products are correctly handled and transported in a safe manner.
The Office of Environment and Hertiage has produced a brochure titled “Safely disposing of asbestos waste from your home” . This contains information for home renovators and builders on the safe handling, storage, transport and disposal of asbestos waste.
Disposal
It is illegal to dispose of asbestos waste in domestic garbage bins. It is also illegal to re-use, recycle or illegally dump asbestos products.
Tamworth Regional Council’s Forest Road Landfill is the only waste facility in the Council area that is licensed to accept asbestos waste.
Bookings for all asbestos disposals must be made at least 24 hours prior to delivery and should be made by phoning the Weighbridge on (02) 6761 3687.
Prepaid Asbestos Bags
Prepaid Asbestos Bags are availabe at the Tamworth Landfill weighbridge office for $12.00 per bag, which includes disposal of the bag. A NSW State Government flyer is issued with the bag which provides guidelines on how to prepare, transport and dispose of asbestos using the prepaid asbestos bag.
