What is a Planning Strategy
A Planning Strategy is a document that is intended to provide a broad direction for the future growth and development of a local government area.
The topics that might be addressed within a Planning Strategy include the natural environment, physical infrastructure, economic development, urban and rural development and land-use planning.
Planning Strategies may affect the entire region or be specific to key sites or areas.
What is the process for preparing a Planning Strategy
Planning Strategies provide a framework to guide Council’s vision for the community and the long term direction for land use development. Planning Strategies consider many current and emerging issues such as:
- environmental, social and economic sustainability
- changing demographic trends and infrastructure requirements
- planning for growth with regard to housing and development
- economic development and employment opportunities
- cultural and heritage maintenance and preservation
A Planning Strategy is a public document which provides the opportunity for government agencies and the community to have input into strategic planning. Community consultation is an important part of this process and when a draft Planning Strategy is being prepared the community will be asked to provide input and feedback.
The community consultation process will usually include notices in the local newspaper, public information sessions, brochures and website information. Council will consider all feedback received prior to endorsing the final strategy document.
Why have Planning Strategies
Planning Strategies developed by Council for the community are designed to effectively manage growth, development, the natural and built environment and to ensure the economic viability of the Tamworth Region.
A Planning Strategy can also form the foundation of a subsequent legal document such as a draft Local Environmental Plan (LEP).
