Heritage is an important feature of the Tamworth region’s built and natural environment, providing the area with its distinct and unique qualities. Our heritage enhances the status of the region as a desirable place for people to live, work, or visit. Council has developed policies such as financial assistance schemes and heritage advisory services, to assist with conservation of historically significant buildings and places and which also provide support to owners of those properties that offer heritage value to the wider community.

Tamworth’s Heritage Walk and Heritage Drive connect key historic sites, buildings and elements. The ‘Explore Tamworth’s Heritage’ brochure has been designed to enable both residents and visitors to share in the fascinating history of the city.

The Tamworth Regional Heritage Assistance Fund is a local grant scheme available to assist with the partial funding of heritage conservation and restoration works for certain properties. Grants are offered on a dollar for dollar basis.

Tamworth Regional Council provides a free heritage advisory service to property owners of older or heritage buildings. The Heritage Advisor is an experienced heritage practitioner who is jointly funded by the NSW Heritage Office and Council.

A Community Based Heritage Study allows for the community work with a heritage consultant; undertaking research, nominating items and considering recommendations for the future management and promotion of their local heritage items.

Tamworth Regional Council’s Significant Tree Register lists approximately 120 trees that Council is seeking to protect and conserve.
