Monday 16 January 2012
INFORMATION SHEET - NAMING OF TWO PARKS IN KOOTINGAL
At the 13 December 2011 meeting, Council approved the naming of two parks in Kootingal and for this to be advertised for 28 days.
• The park currently known as Summers Park is proposed to be called Kootingal Park.
• The park currently known as Anzac Park is proposed to be called Memory Park.
KOOTINGAL PARK
This unnamed reserve is bounded by Denman Avenue and Irvine Street and the IGA Supermarket (refer map below). The park has been known locally as Summers Park and more recently as Kootingal Park.
CHANGE ANZAC PARK TO MEMORY PARK
This park, bounded by Denman Avenue, Sandy Creek and Cockburn Retreat (refer map below) is currently named Anzac Park. Council has approved the name be changed to Memory Park, based on evidence that the Park was originally known as Memory Park in the 1920’s.
Documents indicate that the majority of servicemen from the Kootingal district served on the Western Front during WWI and had no direct involvement at Gallipoli from where the name Anzac arose.
For details in relation to these parks please see the attached file.
