Cross-city traffic heading from Taminda and the west of Tamworth to the Manilla Rd feeder areas will have to detour around the Jewry St bridge for two nights next week because of safety works.
The east bound lane of the bridge will be closed to all traffic on Tuesday and Wednesday to allow the construction of a new pedestrian guard rail across the bridge.
It means traffic heading from the Taminda end will have to detour from the Ebsworth St roundabout at Bunnings back onto Bridge St and across into the city centre to access the Manilla Rd end of the road network.
Traffic coming from the city side across the bridge towards Taminda will still have access at all times during the work.
Tamworth Regional Council says the eastbound lane will be out of action from about 7pm on each of those nights until about 6am the next morning. A new guard rail to improve pedestrian safety is being constructed along the pedestrian walkway on the upstream side of the bridge.
The detour will affect all traffic heading in that direction each night but motorists using the westbound bridge lane are also advised to use caution at night to ensure the safety of construction workers and other motorists.
