Nominations are being called to celebrate our special seniors in the Tamworth Regional Council community.
The Tamworth Regional Council Seniors Week Awards recognise the invaluable contribution of individuals and groups who have assisted older people in the regional community and organisers are now calling for nominations.
Organisers at the Community Centre in Tamworth are encouraging residents to get involved – and promote the work of seniors across the Council area.
“It’s a great community program and a lovely way to acknowledge the contribution of so many special seniors” spokesperson Claire Hartley said.
“If you know of someone you believe is doing something out of the ordinary or something that has been ordinary and is now extra-ordinary – tell Council so we can tell the rest of the Council world too.”
“The nominations are a perfect chance to acknowledge those special people who do special things throughout the year.”
In the past, judges have selected finalists and award winners on such merits as:
Those who have shown initiative in their work for the community
Seniors achieving significant benefits for the community
Those involved in a broad cross-section of the community in their work
People who have provided a role model to inspire and encourage older people
And those who have challenged traditional assumptions about older people and growing older.
Two awards each will be presented for Barraba, Manilla, Nundle and Tamworth communities during the Seniors Week celebrations from March 21 to 28, 2010.
The 2009 senior winners were June Akers in Barraba, Alan Everett at Manilla and Ivy Battle in Tamworth. The community awards went to the Barraba Hospital Auxiliary, Manellae Lodge Fundraising Group and Nundle Lions Club.
Nomination forms are available at Tamworth Community Centre or any Council Office. The closing date is March 8.

The Seniors Week organizing committee will finalise the program of functions and activities to celebrate and involve senior citizens across the council region in the next two weeks. Information on the events will be released soon after.
