The huge influx is underway in Tamworth today with the first of more than 600 participants arriving for Saturday’s historic opening celebrations at the Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre.
Late Thursday about 200 people were already based at the centre with the remaining performers and Saturday’s industry expo figures flowing in today.
The bump in of extra sound and lighting gear and props for the entertainment spectacular has also begun and additional outdoors equine tack and saddlery will continue to move in, especially for the outdoors industry demonstrations and exhibitions.
Tamworth Regional Council general manager Glenn Inglis says rehearsals and practice sessions have been undertaken, both in the stadium and outdoors in the complex paddocks and arenas. One of the stables has been fitted out as a mess hall for competitors and horse handlers. Briefings and induction sessions were held late into the night and again today to introduce the cast members and backstage supporters to the site.
Award winning actor Colin Friels and 2008 Horseman of the Year, the stunt rider Dan James, have already taken to the arena for rehearsals.
The 52 Light Horse troopers involved in the show are on the ground and rehearsing what they say is the biggest ever creative entertainment appearance.
They’re among the star studded lineup for the spectacular show mounted to celebrate the official opening of the $30million centre built by the council.
More than 250 horses – from ponies, to buckjumpers, to miniatures, to veterans of the light horse brigades around the country – are all part of the show.
The free industry expo will begin from 9am and run to 4pm but after 35mm of rain overnight (wed/thurs) any further rain could cause some difficulties. Mr Inglis says some exhibitions might have to be moved if more heavy rain falls. The rain will not affect the indoor stadium events at night.
Among visitors to the centre and staying for the opening night are a delegation from the current King of Malaysia’s Royal Terrengannu Endurance Stable. As the Sultan of Terenngannu, HRH Tuanku Mizan is a keen endurance rider who has competed in Australia in the past. His delegation has had talks today about a future association with AELEC as an endurance event venue.
Tickets for the opening show are selling well and TRC is hoping for a sellout show. Tickets are available through Tourism Tamworth for $30, $15 and $75 (family) ph 6767 5300. The two hour show starts from 8pm also stars Golden Guitar winners Troy Cassar-Daley and Warren H Williams.
