
A petition of 18,679 signatures from Tamworth region residents calling for State Government action on a range of law and order issues was formally handed to Member for Tamworth, Kevin Anderson today.
Tamworth Regional Mayor Col Murray said Mr Anderson was asked to table the petition with State Parliament.
'We needed to have at least 10,000 signatures to ensure the petition would be debated in parliament and by having almost double that number the Tamworth community is sending a very strong message to Macquarie Street', he said.
'I thank the local community for playing such a proactive part in ensuring we have a strong message for the State’s leaders, that we expect them to play their part in finding the solution to what is a social problem in our community',
The petition was a key outcome of a community meeting attended by more than 1000 residents in December last year at Tamworth War Memorial Town Hall. Those at the meeting expressed concern about rising crime and anti-social behaviour as well as finding some possible solutions.
