Tamworth Region Mayor Col Murray with 2016 Community Volunteer of the Year winner Ron Greer
Nominations are now open for the Community Volunteer of the Year Awards and Tamworth Regional Council is encouraging residents to help find suitable candidates.
Tamworth Regional Council Manager Community Care Heather Lynn said the awards are a chance to acknowledge the amazing work of residents.
“It’s heartwarming to read through the nominations each year and hear about the great work that residents are undertaking. Volunteers often go unnoticed, but these awards are a great chance to ensure that they get the praise and thanks they deserve.
“There are five categories, Youth Volunteer of the Year (aged 24 years or younger), Adult Volunteer of the Year (25-64 years), Senior Volunteer of the Year (aged 65+), Volunteer Team of the Year and Student Volunteer of the Year.
“During the Gift of Time awards in 2016, we received applications from 40 organisations who delivered over 400,000 volunteer hours. This shows how many volunteers we have out there doing amazing work in our community, and we would like to ensure they are recognised.”
Last years winners were Jeanette Frewin – Adult Community Volunteer of the Year, Friends of Marsupial Park – Volunteer Team of the Year, John Moore – Youth Volunteer of the Year and Edna McGrath – Senior Volunteer of the Year. Ron Greer won the overall award of 2016 Community Volunteer of the Year for his dedication to the community, having volunteered for over 22 years.
The Community Volunteer of the Year Awards will be held on Thursday 11 May at the Tamworth Community Centre.
