Tamworth Regional Council is addressing the challenges of sustainability in a number of ways.
Council initiatives
Council supported landcare projects include an urban riparian improvement project and the formation of a Tamworth Urban Landcare Group, which has undertaken a number of rehabilitation and replanting programs.
Other environmental initiatives include the Bolton’s Creek project at the effluent reuse farm and the ongoing activities around National Tree Day and Schools Tree Day.
Council operates seven water supply schemes and four waste water schemes, and is undertaking a major new initiative, the Tamworth Sewerage Augmentation and 100% Effluent Reuse Scheme.
Other key Council documents include an Energy Savings Action Plan and an annual State of the Environment Report.
Building alliances
Sometimes, the best results are achieved working with others. That’s why Tamworth Regional Council plays an active role in bodies such as the Namoi Local Government Group, the Namoi Regional Organisation of Councils, and the Northern Inland Regional Waste Group. Through these groups, we have become involved in initiatives such as the Namoi Catchment Action Plan, the Namoi Catchment Sustainability Plan and an active water education program.
Council is also participating in a new program called “Green is the New Black”, which will develop and implement energy, water, waste efficiency projects and riverine improvements in five council areas over the next two years.
Other successful programs have involved urban water efficiency, roadside vegetation management and managing point source pollution.
Council has also supported a Care for Country initiative that brings together the local aboriginal community, the Namoi Catchment Management Authority and TAFE. Stage one of the project, at the Tamworth Regional Botanic Garden, has already been completed.
Getting involved
Tamworth Regional Council encourages residents to make a commitment to sustainability by taking part in Council initiatives such as our rebates for water efficient appliances and our waste management programs, which divert materials such as green, timber and wood waste, construction and demolition material, metal, tyres and chemicals away from landfill.
Council also provides a range of educational resources ranging from water management to backyard burning.
