Parking and other traffic arrangements are determined by Council after being reviewed and approved by the Local Traffic Committee. The Local Traffic Committee meets on the second Wednesday of each month. Minutes of these meetings are available from Council. Tamworth CBD has nearly 4000 car parking spaces, with a variety of time restrictions that apply to both paid and free spaces. Council rangers enforce the sign posted parking restrictions, and drivers are encouraged to check the restrictions to ensure that they are legally parked.

Although most of the region's towns and villages have some parking restrictions in the main streets, Tamworth CBD is the only area to have parking meters. Pay and Display machines operate in several on and off-street parking areas across the CBD.

Council has designated disabled parking spaces throughout the CBD. These spaces are signposted with a symbol for people with disabilities (a person in a wheelchair).

Council Rangers and Parking Officers are authorised to enforce time zone car parking restrictions, disabled, loading and no stopping zones as well as in residential zones around schools and neighbourhood shopping centres. All infringement payments and disagreements are dealt with by the NSW Government State Debt Recovery Office.

Since 2002, NSW Councils have been charged with the responsibility of enforcing parking legislation, such as the NSW Road Rules, in their local areas. While public safety is a primary concern, managing traffic flow and providing equitable access to available parking in high demand areas are major issues for many Councils.
