Council has created Community Management Committees in almost every town or village in the Tamworth Region to assist council in the management of community facilities or make recommendations to council regarding their locality.
What is a Section 355 Committee
Council refers to Community Management Committees as Section 355 Committees. Section 355 is the section of the Local Government Act (1993) that allows Council to delegate some of its functions to a Committee of Council. Along with Section 377 Council uses this delegation to appoint community people to manage facilities or functions.
How many Section 355 Committees are there
At present Council has resolved to delegate responsibility to forty four Section 355 Community Committees.
How do I become a member of a Community Committee
Membership to a Section 355 is open to any member of the public who wishes to be a member. To become a member, request at the next meeting of the committee to become a member and the secretary will note your request in the minutes and forward the minutes to Council for approval.
Council encourages community participation in a number of its functions. One way in which citizens can become involved is by becoming a member of a community committee.
Do Councillors or Council Staff attend Committee meetings
Councillors and Staff, at their discretion, may attend meetings of a Section 355 Community Committee to enable them to gauge the areas of concern of the community. They can assist in prioritising any proposals for improvement, growth and development plans of the area of responsibility of the Community Committee.
How do I get more information on Section 355 Committees
For more information on Section 355 Committees or your local community committee please contact Council on (02) 6767 5557 or download the Section 355 Community Committees Operational Manual.
Community Committees Newsletters
Community Committees enjoy keeping residents informed about what is going on in the region and their neighbourhood. Several committees produce regular newsletters that highlight important accomplishments and milestones. These newsletters become a valuable tool for members of the community to stay informed about what is happening locally.
