Can Council help me locate burial sites of deceased relatives and friends who were interred in cemeteries located within the Tamworth Regional Council area
If you have names (preferably their full names) and if possible birth and death dates and religion, our Customer Service Staff will endeavour to assist. The release of any information is subject to provisions of the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998.
For a genealogy enquiry please email or send a letter/fax to Council with as much detail available. Council can conduct a search of the historical cemetery records and will reply in writing.
All of Council’s cemeteries have unknown burials and unmarked graves and many of the old church records were inadequate or incomplete. In many cases, Council can locate an historical burial in these records, but the actual site may be unclear or there will be no record of a headstone. For example, the Trustees representing the Churches in Tamworth conducted all burials prior to 1967. The mortality rates were higher in the past (particularly for infants and children) and it was common that only the wealthy could afford the erection of headstones.
If you can obtain a death certificate, it will identify the cemetery, parish and religious section for the burial but will not locate the actual burial plot.

- Australian Cemeteries Index
- The purpose of this Australian Family History dedicated site is to provide a searchable data base for all cemetery inscriptions that have been recorded by the authors over several years. It is intended to be a useful tool for those researching their family history. The index contains details of headstones from a number of cemeteries in Australia. It initially concentrated on cemeteries in regional NSW, but is now expanding into other areas as required. This is not a record of burials, but a record of inscriptions on headstones or plaques found in each cemetery.
