Tamworth Regional Council participates in and supports a wide range of community programs, from the locally judged and awarded Sports Awards to the NAIDOC Family Fun Day. Council also supports grassroots initiated projects with two additional grants programs the Annual Donations Program and the Village Improvement Fund, which enable community groups to apply for additional funding.

The Tamworth Regional Sports Awards are an annual event and initiative proudly coordinated by Tamworth Regional Council to recognise outstanding achievements by individuals or teams in the TRC area. The performance qualifying period for the 2010 awards is from 1 October 2009 to 30 September 2010.

The Annual Donations Program gives community groups the opportunity to apply for a grant for projects that have a direct benefit to the community. A total of $61,000 has been set aside as annual donation funding for the region this financial year.

The Village Improvement Fund gives Section 355 Committees the opportunity to apply for funding for capital expenditure that directly benefits the community. Council's contribution to a qualifying project will be limited to $10,000 and the applying committee must be able to match the funding requested.

Council hosts a number of activities supporting Aboriginal culture throughout the year, including Reconciliation Week each May and an annual NAIDOC Family Day in July to celebrate NAIDOC Week.

Approximately 12,000 young people access the Council-run Youthie drop-in youth centre each year, an estimated 75% of whom are Aboriginal. As a result, Council has established a number of popular programs, including the Aboriginal Cultural Showcase.

Australia Day commemorates the beginning of settlement in Australia, when Governor Arthur Phillip landed at Sydney Cove on 26 January 1788. In 1838, the fiftieth anniversary of the landing, it was proclaimed a public holiday.

Citizenship Ceremonies are public, ceremonial occasions, which provide an important opportunity to formally welcome new citizens as full members of the Australian community. Representatives of all three spheres of Government are invited to attend, as are friends and relatives of the candidates.

Tamworth has four international sister city relationships with Gore in New Zealand; Chaoyang District in Beijing, China; Sannohe in Japan and Tamworth in England.

Tamworth Regional Council actively supports water wise activities and encourages the regional community to embrace sustainable options to preserve our precious natural resources. The Regional Tidy Towns Committee is promoting water conservation through the annual Sustainable Community Awards competition.
