Tamworth Regional Council actively supports water wise activities and encourages the regional community to embrace sustainable options to preserve our precious natural resources. The Regional Tidy Towns Committee is promoting water conservation through the annual Sustainable Community Awards competition.

Entry to the annual Tamworth Regional Sustainable Community Awards competition closed Friday 20 May 2011. The awards are designed to encourage the community to embrace sustainability of our urban landscapes, using a number of techniques that reduce water use including:
- selection of plants that have low water requirements
- mulching to retain moisture
- water source (rainwater, bore)
- weed control to reduce competition for moisture
- use of recycled materials
- sustainability and care of the environment such as garden, appearance, design and functionality
The awards embrace all areas in Tamworth Region: Tamworth, Attunga, Barraba, Bendemeer, Kootingal, Manilla, Moonbi, and Nundle. Residents are asked to submit nominations, either self nomination or on behalf of others, on property presentation in 4 categories, Residential, Schools (Small Primary, Large Primary and Secondary), Community Organisations and Rural/Hobby Farms.
Judging
Judging took place between 23 and 25 May 2011. The Awards Presentation was held at 10:00am Friday 27 May 2011 at the Tamworth Community Centre, Darling Street, Tamworth.
Prizes
The awards consisted of a 1st prize in goods to the value of $200 and $50 for highly commended in each category. Major sponsorship was being sought in goods to the value of $250 or cash of $250 to meet the value of $200 for the winner and $50 for the highly commended.
