Each year, Tamworth Regional Council hosts a number of activities relating to Aboriginal culture. These include a formal flag raising ceremony each May to celebrate Reconciliation Week. The event takes place at the Coledale Community Centre, and is attended by local politicians, schools and community members.
The ceremony includes speeches from a Tamworth Regional Council Councillor, a local indigenous school student and an Aboriginal elder, with entertainment provided by an indigenous group.
Council also works with the Yinarr Health and Wellbeing Aboriginal Women’s Group to organise an annual NAIDOC Family Day in July, to celebrate NAIDOC Week.
The event includes a street parade, a flag raising ceremony and a community awards presentation.
Around 1,500 people attend each year, enjoying a free barbecue lunch, performances from local entertainers, local artists selling their works and children’s rides.
